The Biggest Lie Diet Culture Tells Us

Have you ever thought…

“I’ll wear that outfit once I lose weight.”

“I’ll go to the beach when I feel better about my body.”

“I’ll finally be happy when I lose weight.”

If you’ve ever thought this way, you’re not alone.

Many of us have been taught that life will be better once our bodies become smaller.

This is one of the messages of diet culture.

What Is Diet Culture?

Diet culture is a system of beliefs that teaches us our body size determines our beauty, worth, health, and success. It glorifies thinness and makes us believe that losing weight will lead to a better life.

We see these messages everywhere.

People are congratulated for losing weight. Before-and-after photos are celebrated as “success stories.” Advertisements show people losing weight and suddenly becoming happier, more confident, and ready to wear swimsuits or fitted clothes.

We even see stories where losing weight leads to finding love or having a more successful life.

Eventually, we start telling ourselves:

“I’ll do that after I lose weight.”

Without realizing it, we start putting our lives on hold.

But What Are You Really Looking For?

When you imagine losing weight, what do you hope will happen?

Do you want confidence? Love? Acceptance? Freedom?

If you look closely, many of these things aren’t really about weight.

They’re about how you want to feel.

And you don’t need a smaller body to experience them.

You can wear clothes you love, go to the beach, ask your crush out, take pictures, travel, fall in love, and make memories right now.

You don’t have to wait for weight loss to start living.

Your Body Will Change. That’s Human.

Our bodies naturally change throughout our lives because of stress, illness, medication, pregnancy, menopause, aging, and so much more.

That’s not failure. That’s being human.

So ask yourself:

Do you really want people in your life who treat you differently when your body changes?

Would you want a partner who loves you only at a certain size?

The people who truly care about you will value you, not just your body.

What Really Matters?

One day, people won’t remember your weight or clothing size.

They’ll remember your kindness, your laughter, your compassion, the memories you created, and the love you gave.

So maybe we need to ask a different question.

Instead of:

“How can I change my body?”

What if we asked:

“Why have I been taught that my body has to change before I’m allowed to enjoy my life?”

Maybe we need to stop questioning our bodies and start questioning the messages we’ve been taught about them.

Because perhaps the biggest lie diet culture tells us isn’t simply that thinner is better.

It’s that we have to become someone else before we’re allowed to enjoy who we already are.

You don’t have to wait until you lose weight to start enjoying your life.

You can start living the life you want today.
