Intuitive eating is a way of living by listening to your body.
For many of us, this can sound unclear or even unstructured. That’s because most of our lives, we’ve been told:
- what to eat
- when to eat
- how much to eat
We’re also taught that some foods are “good” and others are “bad.” Over time, these rules can make us believe that we can’t trust our own bodies—that if we do, we’ll become unhealthy or won’t fit certain beauty standards.
As a result, we stop listening to our internal cues and let outside voices control our eating and our lives.
But what if your body actually knows what it needs?
Think about when you were a child.
You ate when you were hungry. You stopped when you were full. You might not have eaten at lunchtime if you weren’t hungry—even if it frustrated your caregivers. That wasn’t a lack of discipline. That was your body doing exactly what it was designed to do.
And that ability doesn’t disappear as we get older.
Your body’s hunger, preferences, and needs can change day to day based on things like:
- stress
- sleep
- movement
- hormones
- life events
That variability is normal.
Intuitive eating is not about eating perfectly every day.
It’s about:
- listening to your body
- responding with care
- allowing food to support your life
Food isn’t something you need to fight against.
It can be something that works with you.
